AASW Celebrates World Social Work Day 2025 with National Social Worker Webinar

For Immediate Release 13 March 2025

The Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) is proud to celebrate World Social Work Day 2025 on 18 March with a national webinar exploring this year’s theme: “Strengthening Intergenerational Solidarity for Enduring Wellbeing.”

The webinar, taking place from 6:30pm to 8:00pm (AEDT), will feature AASW National President Julianne Whyte OAM alongside a panel of social work leaders, discussing the importance of intergenerational collaboration in shaping resilient communities and sustainable social systems.

Julianne Whyte is a respected leader in the social work profession, recognised for her contributions to social justice and advocacy. With a career dedicated to improving social work practice and policy, she brings a strong commitment to ethical leadership and the profession’s advancement in Australia.

AASW CEO Cindy Smith highlighted the critical role of social workers in Australia, stating:

“Social work is a profession that continues to grow, with thousands of dedicated professionals working every day to support individuals, families, and communities.”

“With over 46,000 social workers in Australia and the workforce expanding by 2,700 people annually, it is clear that demand for social work expertise is stronger than ever. This is a profession that changes lives.”

“World Social Work Day is a chance to recognise the essential work social workers do in advocating for human rights, social justice, and wellbeing across all generations. This year’s theme highlights how social workers bridge the gap between generations, fostering respect, collaboration, and lasting social change. We look forward to discussing this on the day, ” she said.

The panel will include Chris Harvey, an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker specialising in suicide prevention and men’s mental health; Dimitra Lattas, a social work lecturer and Fulbright Scholar advancing forensic social work education; Dr Fiona Oates, a researcher and author known for her trauma-informed support model for social workers; and Muriel Wymarra, an AASW Board Director and Torres Strait Islander social worker focusing on Indigenous perspectives and professional practice in Torres Strait culture.

In addition to the national webinar, state-based events will be held across Australia, exploring the international theme, and celebrating the profession’s impact at local and national levels.
