Through Social Work education, we may learn the basics of human development, attachment and the impacts of trauma and neglect. However, the practical application of this knowledge and the skills required of us are difficult to obtain and maintain without a workplace culture of ongoing training, supervision, and support.

Trauma informed practice requires a high-level understanding of our own practice frameworks, and a positive and trauma informed work environment/organisational framework.

Whilst this session does include a brief look into to the neurobiological impact of trauma, the focus of this workshop is on understanding trauma responses from young people, and exploring strategies for supporting them through emotional dysregulation.

The workshop will cover the essentials of Trauma Informed Practice:

• The importance of language and a strengths perspective
• A brief refresher on childhood development and attachment
• Defining trauma & understanding the effects of trauma on children and young people
• Brief exploration of trauma and the brain
• Trauma responses we see from children and young people
• Approaches and strategies for working with traumatised children and young people
• Explaining trauma informed practice
• Barriers to implementing trauma informed practice.
• The session also includes 4 experiential learning activities to invite reflection and application of knowledge.

Who should attend?

This 3-hour interactive online workshop gives emerging social work practitioners an opportunity to learn through experiential activities, case study reflections and delivery of knowledge.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will:

• Build confidence and knowledge in understanding the basics of trauma
• Develop practical skills in applying impacts of trauma knowledge to practice
• Identify trauma informed strategies to support people who are escalated
• Develop a framework suitable to share with young clients for psycho education purposes.
• Understand the importance of self-care when working with people who have experienced trauma.
