Sandwiched carers often face greater challenges than non-sandwiched carers, as their caregiving role is demanding and competes with other life responsibilities. According to the stress process model introduced by Pearlin et al. (1981, 1990), caregiving is viewed as a stressful activity that can negatively impact the well-being of the caregiver.
