Why be an AASW member?
Am I eligible?
Membership of the AASW is available to applicants holding either:
- An AASW approved social work qualification from an Australian tertiary institution; or
- Qualifications from overseas that have been recognised by the AASW as comparable to an AASW approved social work qualification.
Australian qualified social workers
An AASW accredited Bachelor of Social Work degree or Master of Social Work (qualifying) is required for entry into the profession of social work, and to meet the minimum eligibility requirements for AASW membership.

There are a number of discontinued courses, which also provide eligibility for membership.

Internationally qualified social workers
If you have completed social work studies overseas (outside Australia), you need to apply for an assessment of these qualifications to determine if you are eligible for AASW membership (for employment purposes in Australia). This serves a separate purpose to an assessment for migration, but it uses the same application form. Applicants can apply for an assessment for both migration purposes and membership eligibility (employment) at the same time. This is encouraged as it saves applicants from having to apply for another assessment at a later date.
Social Work students
Students enrolled in an AASW accredited Bachelor of Social Work or Master of Social Work (qualifying) are eligible for an AASW Student membership. However, please note Insurance is not included in student membership.
Discontinued Courses
A number of discontinued courses provide eligibility for membership of the AASW. All new applicants who hold qualifications pre-1974, which are less than four years of tertiary degree-level study, will be required to provide evidence of relevant employment in the social welfare field for at least 50% of the time following completion of the course.
