AASW support for a First Nations Voice to Parliament
Consistent with its support for the Uluru Statement from the Heart, the Board of AASW has decided to support the Voice to Parliament. Consequently, the AASW has joined with the Allies of Uluru Coalition in supporting the referendum. The Coalition includes Reconciliation Australia and the Australian Council of Social Service (ACOSS).
In coming to the decision, the AASW recognises that this is a complex matter with multiple perspectives, deserving of respectful consideration. As always, members are encouraged to inform themselves and vote as they see fit.
“We acknowledge the pain of past and continuing racism and structural inequality. We walk with our First Nations peoples. We recognise their sovereignty and their continuous connection with the land over 65,000 years”
Vittorio Cintio, AASW National President
The Board acknowledges that a successful yes vote would not by itself guarantee positive change for First Nations People. However, the AASW remains hopeful that the proposed change will be a significant step towards treaty making and truth-telling. We will certainly continue to advocate for the systemic and structural changes necessary to bring about truth-telling and treaty.
The AASW National President, Vittorio Cintio stated “We acknowledge the pain of past and continuing racism and structural inequality. We walk with our First Nations peoples. We recognise their sovereignty and their continuous connection with the land over 65,000 years”
